Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born on 22 May 1772 in Radhanagar village of Murshidabad district, West Bengal. Raja Ram Mohan received his early education in his village. His father’s name was Ramkant Rai Vaishnav, his father sent Raja Ram Mohan to Patna for better education. At the age of 15, he learned Bangla, Parsi, Arabic, and Sanskrit; it can be inferred from how intelligent he was. A strong supporter of monotheism, Raj Ram Mohan Roy abandoned orthodox Hindu rituals and idol worship since childhood. While his father Ramkanto Roy was a staunch Hindu Brahmin.

If there are differences, leave the house

Raja Ram Mohan was not against idolatry and orthodox Hindu traditions, he was against all forms of social chauvinism and superstition. But despite this, his father was a conservative Hindu Brahmin. At an early age, Raja Ram Mohan had differences with his father in the name of religion. At such an early age, he left home and went on a trip to the Himalayas and Tibet.

When he returned, his parents got him married to make changes. Yet Raja Ram Mohan Roy continued to study the depths of Hinduism to highlight hypocrisy in the name of religion. He read the Upanishads and Vedas deeply. He then wrote his first book ‘Tuhpat al-Muwahiddin’ in which he advocated religion and opposed its customs and rituals.

Protest against sati

About 200 years ago, when evils such as “Sati Pratha” held society, social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy played an important role in bringing about a change in society. She opposed the “sati practice”, forcing a widow to burn with her husband’s funeral pyre. He campaigned for equal rights for men for women. In which he also advocated the right to remarry and the right to own property. In 1828, Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the “Brahmo Samaj”, which is considered one of the Indian socio-religious reform movements.

One of the most dangerous and superstitious traditions spread in the society of that time, such as sati, was a campaign against child marriage and an attempt to end it. King Ram Mohan Roy had said that there is no mention of Sati in any Vedas. After which, with the help of Governor-General Lord William Baiting, he enacted a law against the practice of Sati. In several states, he went and made people aware of the practice of Sati. He put a lot of effort into changing people’s thinking and this tradition.

Study done in Varanasi

After marriage, King Ram Mohan Roy moved to Varanasi and there he studied Vedas, Upanishads, and Hindu philosophy deeply. Meanwhile, his father Ramkant Rai Vaishnav died in 1803, after which he again returned to Murshidabad. Meanwhile, Raja Mohan Rai started working in the revenue department of the East India Company. He worked as an assistant to John Digby. During his job, he came in contact with Western culture and literature. He then studied Jainism with Jain scholars and studied Sufism with the help of Muslim scholars. Thus he studied and understood many religions.

Spiritual assembly formed after Sati system

After the practice of Sati, Raja Ram Mohan formed an Atmiya Sabha in 1814 and tried to initiate social and religious reforms in the society. This includes justice for women to remarry, rights to women in property, etc. Raja Ram Mohan was a man who strongly opposed the practice of Sati and polygamy.

They wanted education to be promoted especially women should be educated. Apart from Indian culture in education, the emphasis was laid on the study of English, science, western medicine, and technology, because society can be changed only on the basis of education. Raja Ram Mohan built the Adhikari School for English education in 1822.
