The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) has confirmed that this ozone hole has now ended. It has been told that this hole was not small but had a circumference of 10 lakh square kilometres.
The reason is not a lockdown
CAMS found in its report that the ozone hole that develops over the Antarctic in the spring is an annual phenomenon, conditions for such strong ozone depletion in the Northern Hemisphere are not common. Researchers have attributed this to the temperature fluctuations.
Report said: Polar vortex is the main reason behind this, which are responsible for bringing cold air to the polar areas and the subsequent treatment of the ozone layer. Scientists have said that this change has not happened due to a decrease in human activities. That is, there is no reason behind it, such as lockdown or pollution.
Explain that the zone is a colourless gas found mainly in the Earth’s stratosphere, which forms a protective layer between the Sun and the Earth and absorbs the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The ozone layer has been damaged for decades due to human activities.
Damage was first detected in 1985
Significantly, the ozone layer was first damaged in 1985 and was called the Antarctic ozone hole. It was later noted that the man-made chemical compound called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) caused a decrease in ozone concentrations in the stratosphere.
